It is possible to remove previous tattoos with lasers. The first of these lasers was a carbon dioxide laser (CO2) but it resulted in deep thermal burn with subsequent scarring. The next step was invention of erbium laser. Work of the erbium laser was superficial and only treated the surface appearance. Slight scarring was not excluded. More modern lasers de-fragment the pigment and remove it through lymphatic system.
